I’m one of those people … I always thought, if it’s reasonable to have a conversation with someone physically there, at a reasonable talking volume, why does it matter if I’m doing the same on my phone?

I relate to this style more than the other comments in this thread, this seems more typical of a large company.
You need to define clear needs out of your request: start with your end goal, the processes you need, the mechanical details of the processes you need to write, how much detail you are comfortable with, and the format in which you want it . and take all of that to the senior or director level of whatever department manages those systems. They may or may not know the exact information you need, but it should be their job to delegate and translate the request such that their reports can collate what you need in the form that you need it. And because it’s the director delegating, the engineers have inherent CYA and will be a lot more comfortable giving you what you need.
Unfortunately this adds to the bureaucracy, but it really is the most effictive way of translating business needs to engineering needs. It’s not a straightforward process, and accurately defining the steps that need to happen for a job to get done, takes someone with a lot of experience and training.
If you’re in a startup or smaller company, then I think the other comments that prioritize asking and listing to what the engineers recommend, is the best approach.

As scary as the lockdown was, it was an interesting year of protests for BLM and labor movements. Once everyone had a lot of time on their hands, they started to take action on import topics.
Now I feel like most people are back to the grind, and as a whole we don’t have the time to quickly make changes we want to see
I am struggling to find a source, but the tradeoff between road and railways scales with congestion. The infrastructure needed for moving 1000 trucks per hour on a road is much more expensive than 1 truck per hour. Rails, however, scale much more easily, as the freightline is typically closely managed already.
I’ll never buy something on the first research stint. I’ll do my reseach, draw up my notes, then move on to the next obsession of the week. A few months later, if I get the same obsession on that topic, then putting money into the project is allowed

I like /all too, just to be clear. But sometimes I’d like to browse the equivalent of /all, just without politics. Sometimes it’s a little much and the feed could be 70%+ posts about the US election
Plus, some instances seem to have a certain “style” to them. I feel like it would be cool if there was some currated feeds that instances presented, that include content across multiple instances that fit that “style”. Would just be an easier way to explore those niche communities. It would also kinda solve the issue with having fractured communities for the same topic across multiple instances
Yeah. Or just personalized feeds that you could share. I’m sure some instances have a great list of communities that their subscribers follow, that isn’t available on/Local. And going to /All isn’t always a good time. If there was like a /All, but maybe with some extra filters, that users could just subscribe to, that would be awesome
Very concise answer. Linux was intimidating for me aswell when I first dual-booted it, and I didn’t understand it the first time around. But getting started in it was a lot of fun, and every time I came back, it got easier, until eventually it was the same for me as Windows
You have any sources for this? A quick glance at wikipedia says that hydrogen ICE has about the same energy efficiency as gasoline, if the engine is properly tuned.
Ads work differently than that. At least good ones do.
A good ad is almost imperceptible in presenting an idea to you. I have no doubt that people that are bombarded with ads that they say they “ignore” are still influenced over not having seen the ad at all
I think Lemmy has steadily been getting better. For having a good conversation, I think this is the best platform, everyone here seems like actual people I would run into irl.
What I think is still lacking is a way to search up anecdotal evidence on something, that I still heavily rely on reddit for. For instance if I type in google “french press coffee brew time” the only valuable results with the in-depth info I’m looking for are usually youtube videos, which are too long, or reddit threads. So I usually just end up adding site:reddit.com for all those type of search results.
But lemmy is getting good. I could see it replacing some info sources for the more tech-y niches I follow in the near future
1000% agree. But to Lemmy’s credit, I found a greate niche community of linux and programming enthusiasts, plus I’ve noticed I run into Europeans more in the wild on here.
I think the fediverse has it’s benefits. Still not a full replacement. Truthfully I don’t think it will ever be, those niche communities will always end up being hosted where it suits them best.
I agree with this sentiment but I don’t see it actually convincing anyone of the dangers of AI. It reminds me a lot of how teachers said that calculators won’t always be available and we need to learn how to do mental math. That didn’t convince anyone then
