  • My experience is pretty good as the team has the general mindset of, “Avoid waisting other people’s time, get stuff done, and do quality work. If you are doing that we don’t care what your process is.”

    A lot of movement is going to draw people’s attention. It’s just baked into humans. If you need to do movement that is going to be in people’s line of sight while they work, just go for a walk.

    You will feel watched and judged. But the reality is they have their own work and problems to worry about. Generally if your not interfering with them doing their own thing, they don’t care.

    People being OK with you doing off task things like reading would be like an earned privilege if allowed at all. You are new and will need to prove that you can deliver. If you earn a reputation for consistent, quality, on time work you manager will be more open to you managing your own schedule.

    Volume control is important. Most conversations seem to happen at the level between normal conversation and whispering. This generally means conversations are not disruptive to people nearby. But always assume everyone around you can hear everything you say and choose topics/words accordingly.

    I didn’t share my ADHD with my manager until I was well established in my role and trusted that wanted to help me succeed. I’m not saying that is the correct choice, just what I did. Before that we did have many conversations about how I can work most effectively finding the balance of what I need and what the team needs.

    As for accomodations, I would get explicit permission to were noise blocking headphones and a desk that doesn’t face an area with a lot of traffic. People moving in your line of sight all day is super distracting.










  • As for food functionality it is very comparable to software remote control of a computer. There are 3 key features that stand out:

    • It does not rely on the target machine being booted into the OS. This means you can access it even if it crashes or locks up.
    • It can “push” the power button on the machine. This requires an accessory that plugs into the motherboard. So you can force a machine off or cold boot a system.
    • You can mount a boot ISO. This is like having a bootable flash drive in the target machine so you can install an OS remotely.

    Edit: Because this is essentially full access to the machine as if you where physically at it, it should be considered a security risk. Not saying that you need to be scared of it, but you should be aware of the risk and protect it from unauthorized access.





  • It sounds like you are fundamentally trying to embrace healthier habits. I would suggest starting by examining the feeling. Just spend some time thinking about it before acting. Why do I feel motivated to do this? How will I feel while doing it? How will I feel after? Do I gain something from this worth the downsides?

    The goal is to make a decision about what you are doing and why instead of just falling into old patterns of behavior with thought.


  • My perspective. I don’t think anyone has done anything wrong in this situation. You are clearly upset because you are worried about your friend. You are upset because the other person does not feel the concerned for your friend the way you are. That response is understandable, but not rational. Humans be like that.

    I think the idea of leaving your family celebration early to spend some time with your friend is a reasonable solution. Nobody gets everything, but nobody is left out.

    I understand that my view point is lacking in years of nuance for the situation and could be totally off. I leave you to judge how accurate/useful my perspective is.
