I’ve pirated books that are so rare their used copies cost hundreds of euros. Also there are the English academic publications, which have insane prices even by default, and boy do I love hoarding them. In general, I’ve pirated so much I have no idea how I’d even go about estimating the theoretical total cost.
OTOH I’ve also recently been thinking about how much money I have spent on legally obtaining media, going to concerts and film screenings and plays and exhibitions and everything else… Should be solidly in the four-digit area.

Wait… what?
Tbh I find that they were always surprisingly lenient on piracy. There are multiple subreddits about piracy websites, some of which had their Telegram channels blocked multiple times in the last year or two, while having no issues on reddit, and even some subreddits where people directly link to pirated content.
I don’t think piracy is legal anywhere.
I’m not sure if #ebooks mirrors Libgen. I wouldn’t be surprised if they copy from each other.
It is unclear to me what’s the method to upload to #ebooks. I’ve uploaded some obscure books to Libgen in the past, so I checked whether they’re available on #ebooks, and they’re not. So… they don’t mirror each other. I checked both UnderNet and IRCHighway, and the latter even directed me to these websites in case I’m looking for textbooks. It doesn’t seem like an adequate replacement for LG, at least for my purposes.
I have allergies against ads, countdowns, etc. The interweb is polluted with that stuff and so are most piracy sites.
As I’ve said, this is not a big issue with the sites listed on the uptime tracker I linked. Libgen.is and Z-library have neither (the latter has daily download limits per IP), AA has a countdown (not always), and libgen.li has ads (which I had no idea about until I saw other people mentioning it, thanks to uBlock).
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t #ebooks basically just mirror Libgen?
Among the major book downloading websites, only libgen.li has ads, and only Anna’s Archive has a countdown.
It’s been offline for like a month, maybe more, I haven’t kept track. I don’t know any details, maybe there’s info on their forums, but overall the owners are quite secretive.
And you know what? Good for them. (Assuming he didn’t just make up the whole story.)
Meta did not immediately respond to Ars’ request for comment and has maintained throughout the litigation that AI training on LibGen was “fair use.”
When I upload a single half century old photo to Wikipedia, I have to fill out a relatively complicated form proving that it meets “fair use” standards. Internet Archive got legally fucked for allowing people to read their book scans without restriction for a while. And now these absolute cunts have the gall to defer to “fair use”! I really wonder if the same authors and publishing houses who sued IA will do anything about this.
Right, people shouldn’t inform themselves, we should all get our news only from online forums and blogs you politically agree with.
You mean here on Lemmy? I think they disabled them on reddit anyway.
Perhaps the real right place for the sticker was the drawer all along?
Exactly. Nobody can author, own, or “steal” a joke, a proverb, a riddle, a folk tale, a nursery rhyme, graffiti… Memes are just the digital equivalent of such cultural artefacts.
Nice! I’ll… save this meme.
Sorry for this slightly random remark, but fuck whoever unironically came up with concept of “stealing” memes.
Yeah, what the fuck, he grew a unibrow within a few days??
That’s true, but organising and managing such a distributed form of IA would probably be a nightmare of a job. I’ve seen many people suggest that to IA, but they seem to be very very reluctant about the idea.
If we’re going to stick to ancient Greek references, one of these is closer to the modern day Augean stables.
Tbh a lot of the torrenting terminology is quite metaphorical and doesn’t make sense without understanding all the mechanics. Seeding? Leeching? Ports? Clients? And even the central concept - “torrent”?
