It feels strangely vindicating when symptoms that just look like ‘a weird bug’ to my dumb ass actually make sense to folks who know what they’re doing.
Thanks for the insight!
You can block element on that pop-up with uBlock Origin, and it starts working again.
If you can’t click anything, there’s a transparent layer still in the way, so you may need to do a second block element (click anywhere and the entire screen should highlight).
Weird side effect is that the scroll stops working sometimes, but if you make the video full screen then back it fixes it.
64gb USB stick filled to the brim with pirated music. No skipping, no ads. This is the way.
Our boy’s all grown up! :'-)

The earth will be fine. It’s been through way worse than us.
People say this a lot, but what are we calling ‘fine’?
Supporting life is what makes Earth special; if that’s snuffed out and Earth becomes just another dead rock floating through space, I’d argue it isn’t fine at all, in the same sense that you or I wouldn’t be fine if we suddenly died, even though our physical corpse would remain for much longer.
And we’re WAY far away from life being completely extinguished, but even in its current state with life relatively abundant, Earth is running a high fever, so I’d say it’s already crossed the ‘not fine’ line.
We’ve discovered hundreds of billions of planets, and so far we’re only aware of life existing on a single one of them: life is an incredibly rare, incredibly fragile, statistically insignificant fluke in our universe. It may literally be the single best example of “it’s the exception, not the rule”.
So, why are people always so certain that it’ll persist? Life in general will certainly persist well beyond humans, but even the most resilient of extremophiles have their limits. The whole “Life, uh, finds a way” is great and all, until it doesn’t.
The damage we’re doing to our planet directly is pretty small on a universal scale, but we’re playing with forces we don’t understand - some of those forces are feedback loops, so our involvement may be the first tiny domino that sets off a cascade of increasingly large dominos until our planet is molten all the way to its core.
Or, we die off and feedback loops stop, the environment stabalizes, and Earth lives on happily ever after. Or anything in between: the point is we have no idea, and no basis to make and real predictions good or bad.
Hopefully Earth will be fine.
…sorry that was so wordy. I ramble when I’m tired.
The orange version actually matches pretty nicely with the world’s current political dumpsterfire.
I’m probably the least tech savvy person on Lemmy. If my dumb ass can figure it out, the subset of Reddit’s population who we’d actually want in Lemmy’s community should have no problem.
That said, onboarding could have been better, and you’re right about the potential hangups: “fediverse” sounds like some kind of federal government function like a hub website that links to all the different .gov agencies, and “Lemmy” sounds like a cartoon character. Choosing an instance was more stressful than it probably should have been; ultimately went with .world by blindly following the advice of a YouTube video, but on day 1 I was pretty oblivious to the extremist shit that’s associated with instances like .ml and had no clue what ‘tankie’ even meant.
That was two years ago though - no idea if that reflects what getting started is like today.
And again, that’s all coming from a relatively tech-dumbass, so I’d imagine it’s probably smoother for people less prone to starting a fire when they turn their computer turns on.
Edit: sorry to anyone who had to read that before the edit… when I’m tired I have an annoying tendency to think a word as I’m typing and then just skip to the next one. And I’m tired all the fucking time, so my posts have a lot of holes Q_Q
don’t lie - ever
That can be dangerous advice in some contexts. Like if you’re an immigrant being confronted by an ICE agent, say whatever you need to say to get the fuck out of there.
Basically if a Nazi asks if you’re a Jew, the answer is ALWAYS ‘no’ regardless of whether or not that’s true.
I won’t criticize others for something I’m guilty of myself
Often it takes seeing other people engaging in a habit that you share to realize or accept it’s a bad one: criticism can still be warranted and constructive, but in that case I’d own the complicity openly and direct the criticism to ‘we’. Introspection is good!
Pushing 4 decades, and the older I get the more I try to live by a philosophy of: be the person you wish you had when you were in their shoes.
Biggest thing is school right now: I did the college thing a bit a long time ago, struggled academically and financially, joined the military instead, separated, and now I’m back for round 2 using the GI Bill. I try to generate as many resources for my classmates as possible, run study groups, host group chats, send out reminders… The VA gives me a stipend for supplies each semester, which I’ll use in it’s entirety and give those supplies to the class. At clinicals (on-the-job education - nursing school) I’ve noticed a few students don’t eat cuz weren’t able to pack a lunch and hospital cafeteria food is WAY expensive for the average broke-ass college student, so I’ll cover the odd meal and tell em to just pay it forward once they get their RN. Shit like that. Kinda feels like I have 50 sons and daughters lol. But I remember my first attempt at college and how overwhelming everything felt… idk if having a ‘me’ would have made any difference in the outcome of round 1 - can’t make the horse drink and all - but if I can hook these kids up with an easier ride, then fuck yeah I’ll do what I can!
I try to apply that kind of approach to pretty much any context - be it school, work, or just random encounters with people.
Feels good to be helpful.
It was posted 8 years ago, so slightly easier to gather up those relics then.
If I had to guess, the guy might have worked IT for a school or something that went through a modernization, with all the old tech going to the dumpster; got the idea and jumped on it.
On the off chance you haven’t experienced the Floppotron:
I mean… if we reeeaaally wanna carbon date ourselves…
Getting Falling in Reverse vibes.
…also this thread needs more links!
…don’t leave us hanging, what did the bartender say?!
“Back when I was your age in the late 1900s…”
Pixar’s “Buy n’ Large” and “Allinol” are pretty clever.
No instances, but I’ve blocked 868 communities so far. Either languages I don’t understand or topics I’m not interested in… the vast majority of which being sports and anime/furry porn.
I’ve found I don’t really subscribe to communities to see a feed of just those. I’d rather see EVERYTHING and curate the feed reductively. Kinda seemed sisyphean at first, but my ‘All’ is fairly personalized now, so I’d recommend that approach to anyone who browses All frequently.
