Not that they’re the same, but this feels like not letting people be strippers because some people may feel degraded by it. I could understand having legislation that provides protections for employees through employer obligations to ensure a safe environment, but ultimately it’s the choice of the individual if they’re okay with the work or not. It’s not just high school. That’s just how chemistry is taught because it’s extremely complex and requires many simplifications to be able to teach it to a lay person in any meaningful capacity. Good instructors will mention these simplifications, but it’s likely your current understanding of certain things (especially organic compounds) is also overly simplified. It’s unfortunately the only way to teach it.

If you have the technical knowledge (or ability to follow instructions) you can setup your torrents behind a VPN using qBittorrent and gluetun in one docker container, and Plex/Jellyfin in another with a shared volume between them. It provides you near bullet proof protection due to the isolated environment and prevents accidentally clicking those .mp4.exes since it abstracts file management away from you. It’s also super user friendly once set up even if you’re not running a media server 24/7 and just want it for your desktop.

If you wanna get fancy you can use the *arr suite of software to do some magic fairy shit including automatic indexing (searching dozens of torrent sites simultaneously), but that can quickly become a deep rabbit hole. Once setup though it’s seamless and kicks ass.

Should be at least double in the US since it would be consultancy work which brings higher taxes (1099 vs W2) and no benefits. A $500 full day consultation is super cheap.

I wasn’t blaming it on anyone. I was just explaining why so many young people, myself included, choose to not give any thought to things they can’t control. It’s not worth the mental energy and will make you depressed and miserable. I’m all for fighting for things that can be changed, but there’s only so much one person can do. Prioritizing what one can give effort to is a much better way to go about it than stressing out about everything wrong with the world.

Because many of us were thrust into an extremely fucked up world where caring all the time will give you anxiety and leave you feeling hopeless. It’s much more productive to focus your efforts on things you can control instead of being upset about the things you can’t. I’m very conscious of the world I leave behind. I respect nature, don’t litter, don’t own a car, limit my meat intake, and most importantly I’m not having children. All of these things will contribute to a better world, but they don’t require me to care about anything outside of my control.

This has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with trying to be okay in an increasingly more depressing world. I just want to exist and not dread everything all the time.

I’m a Zoomer with a Dell Optiplex running Ubuntu server, an 18 TB HDD, and 35 years of combined seed time. I’ll let you fill in the gaps. Many of us are extremely tech literate and often share our Plex/Jellyfin instances with friends. Many of these not-so-etch-literate friends ask how they can do this for themselves using their computers and we shoot them over instructions.

Piracy is infinitely easier/more accessible than ever. It’s spreading like wildfire and thanks to the FOSS community anyone with a spare evening can get themselves up and running very quickly.

Not OP, but I just use ZeroTier for this since it’s dead simple to setup and free. I’m sure there’s some 100% self-hosted solutions, but it’s worked for me without issue.

I’m more of a toasted salami and cheese on sourdough with mustard, salt, and pepper guy personally, but any sandwich really fits the bill. Sometimes I say fuck it and just throw butter and cheese on some bread when I’m really feeling lazy.

I’d say it’s more convenience than elitism.

I’m in BTN and it’s the only indexer I use for my Sonarr instance because it has absolutely everything. I’ve never not been able to find something and almost everything I download will saturate my 1.2 Gbps connection.

For Radarr I don’t have any private trackers and it takes 35 public trackers to get coverage that is almost as good. The options I’m given are way less organized and download speeds are a gamble. It’s not really an issue because I rarely watch movies, but I definitely understand why private trackers are so sought after. I’ll eventually try to get into some smaller ones which tend to be pretty easy to do.

I’ve been using Google’s Gemini and it’s pretty good at interpreting fucked up or imperfect smart commands. For example we have some lights named “Chrimas Lights” and it will turn those on and off by referring to them as Christmas lights. It can also do multiple commands in a row without being overly explicit. So you can say “set lights to x%, make them yellow, and turn them off in an hour and set my TV to volume x” and it’ll do it no problem. The old assistant could not do anything even close to this.

It’s also much faster and processes words as fast if not faster than a human can. From finishing a command to the command being executed seems to be about 1/10th of a second which makes me wonder if it’s doing any sort of inferencing on the back end. It’s one of the best LLM integrations I’ve seen so far.

That’s interesting given that in California pre-school is 4-yo and kindergarten is the year after that.

Almost every personal computer that isn’t a MacBook is poorly secured due to the lack of filesystem encryption as a default. No one encrypts their data at rest, and as such you just have to pull their drive and read it with another computer. Hell, I don’t encrypt my entire file system despite being aware of this because of the inconvenience of added boot time, but everything that matters is encrypted and backed up across multiple devices.

The best thing anyone can do is keep the amount of critical, digital data they have to a minimum, keep that data encrypted and backed up, and use a password manager properly. That alone makes it exceedingly unlikely you will ever be a victim of cybercrime solely because you’re more of a pain in the ass to compromise than 99.9% of the world.

I personally have almost 10TB of data between all my systems, but of that maybe 10 MB is actually valuable to anyone but me.

I’ve started quoting people twice my hourly rate from my full time job and it’s gotten it to largely stop.

I have it free through T-Mobile and still use my Plex server for any movies on Netflix because I can get 4k BluRay quality. Hell, you can even request that the torrent download start to end effectively letting you stream it. Make sure to only do that on healthy torrents though because it’s awful for the health of smaller torrents.
