    The Korean war spun out of the Chinese Civil War and how both (simplifying) NATO and the USSR were already using it as a proxy. We got involved to protect our interests, same as any other war.

    If you want to argue that South Korea is better off because of it? I fully agree (I doubt North Korea would have become the hellscape it is now, but a Warsaw Pact Korea would never be as prosperous as South Korea is today). But it was the exact same “we fight a war over there so we don’t have to fight a war here” logic.
